About Me

My academic and professional interests span Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Software Engineering, Distributed and Cloud Computing, Computer Networks, Computer Architecture, and Embedded Systems. Throughout my career, I have worked at the intersection of academic research and real-world engineering, with a particular emphasis on developing software-intensive systems and translating research and emerging technologies into practical applications.

Education

I received my B.S. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1986, my M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA, in 1989, and my Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1995. I received the title of Associate Professor in Computer Engineering Sciences, specializing in Software Engineering, in 1999.

My M.S. research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison focused on the Galaxy Hardware Description Language, while my Ph.D. research addressed parallel computer hardware and software architectures for digital signal processing.

Academic Career

My academic career began at Uludağ University, where I served as a Lecturer in the Department of Electronics Engineering from March 1990 to May 1997.

From May 1997 to July 2002, I worked full-time at the TÜBİTAK National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), where I served in research, software and systems engineering, project management, and senior technical roles. During the same period, I maintained a part-time academic appointment in the Department of Computer Engineering at Marmara University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses approximately half a day per week and supervising undergraduate and master's theses.

From August 2002 to August 2008, I served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Fatih University. I then served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Engineering at Haliç University from September 2008 to September 2010. From September 2010 to July 2016, I continued my academic career at Gediz University as Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Engineering.

In 2018–2019, I served as an Adjunct Professor at both Istanbul Esenyurt University and Doğuş University. I subsequently served as Professor at Istanbul Aydın University from February 2019 to February 2022 and at Istanbul Atlas University from March 2022 to January 2026.

Since February 2026, I have been serving as Professor of Computer Engineering in the Department of Computer Engineering at Istanbul Arel University. Throughout my academic career, my responsibilities have included undergraduate and graduate teaching, research supervision, curriculum and course development, project-based engineering education, departmental leadership, and the integration of contemporary Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence technologies into education and research.

Research Interests

My recent research increasingly focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to real-world engineering problems, including intelligent vision systems, industrial inspection, decision-support systems, and AI-assisted software engineering.

Professional and R&D Experience

In addition to my academic career, I have extensive experience in industrial and government-funded R&D projects. I have worked as a software developer, system and software architect, project manager, chief researcher, consultant, reviewer, and technical advisor in public institutions and private-sector organizations.

From May 1997 to July 2002, I worked full-time at the TÜBİTAK National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), ultimately serving as Chief Researcher and Project Manager. During this period, I contributed to major national projects involving secure communications, network management, electronic key-management systems, software architectures, and engineering project management.

I have also contributed to activities associated with Turkey's representation in the NATO INFOSEC Working Group.

Later in my career, I provided research, technology, project-management, and software-engineering consultancy to a range of organizations and project teams. My professional activities have included the assessment and monitoring of industrial R&D projects as well as advising organizations on Software Engineering, system architecture, R&D management, and technology development.

Teaching

Over the course of my academic career, I have taught a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Engineering and related disciplines. My teaching areas include Software Engineering, Software Requirements Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Cloud Computing, Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, Computer Architecture, Microprocessors, Embedded Systems, and Computer Programming.

An important part of my teaching philosophy is connecting fundamental engineering concepts with real software systems, research problems, project-based learning, and contemporary AI technologies.

Publications and Academic Activities

I have authored and co-authored academic journal papers, conference papers, book chapters, technical reports, and books covering areas including Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, Distributed Systems, Computer Architecture, Embedded Systems, and Digital Signal Processing.

I have also served as a reviewer, referee, evaluator, and technical advisor for academic, industrial, and public R&D activities.
